Description of the Program

The Master's Degree concentration in Business and Marketing Education is designed to further prepare qualified business and marketing educators for career roles in the profession. It is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in business, marketing or a related field and hold a teaching license in Business or Marketing Education. Enrolling students should have academic preparation in business/marketing education or have sufficient related work experience in business or marketing occupations to qualify them for teaching licensure. With that preparation, the program requires completion of a core of courses in Business and Marketing Education based on the student's career objective in business and marketing education.

This Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction allows study toward either the Master of Education or Master of Science degree. The Master of Science with Business and Marketing Education concentration requires a minimum of 39 semester hours of course work including the development of a thesis. The Master of Education program allows for wider latitude in the choice of course work. It requires a minimum of 36 semester hours and does not include a thesis. The requirements for advanced licensure, the Master's Degree, in Business and Marketing Education can be met through either the Master of Education or Master of Science program.

Education Objectives of the Program

The goal of the concentration in Business and Marketing Education at North Carolina State University is to contribute to the growth and quality of Business and Marketing Education in secondary and post secondary educational institutions and in business and industry. This is accomplished through the professional development of business and marketing educators, the encouragement of program and curriculum improvement in Business and Marketing Education, and the development and dissemination of research.

The broad program objectives are:

  • To prepare educators for leadership positions in Business and Marketing Education in North Carolina and elsewhere.
  • To increase the quality of Business and Marketing Education through integrated study of the discipline of business and marketing and the principles, theory, and philosophy of Business and Marketing Education.

Persons completing the Master's degree concentration in Business and Marketing Education will be able to:

  • Integrate the theory and practice of business and marketing into Business and Marketing Education programs, activities, and services.
  • Evaluate existing Business and Marketing Education program and develop strategies for improvement.
  • Plan and manage effective instruction and curriculum development.
  • Analyze research in business/marketing and Business and Marketing Education and implement appropriate findings.
  • Conduct rudimentary research directed at problems at the local and state levels.
  • Provide professional support for persons entering the Business and Marketing Education profession.
  • Serve in consulting and service roles to improve the availability and quality of Business and Marketing Education for individuals, organizations, and businesses.
  • Assume leadership roles within the professional structure of Business and Marketing Education.
  • Supervise and administer Business and Marketing Education programs in education and business.
  • Apply strategic planning to determine the need for and to design, specific Business and Marketing Education courses, programs, and services for specific clients/students.
  • Increase the level of support and commitment for quality Business and Marketing Education.

Admission Requirements

The Business and Marketing Education program is administered within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the established admissions requirements for that department apply. Department of Curriculum and Instruction admissions requirements for the master's degree programs include:

  2. Hold a Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or related field from an accredited college or
    university with a GPA of at least 3.0
  3. Hold a Class 'A' teaching license in Business or Marketing Education
  4. Acceptable score from either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
  5. Currently employed as a Business/Marketing Education teacher or a minimum of three years of
    Business and Marketing teaching experience

Your application is not complete until the following items have been received by the Graduate School:

  1. Two official copies of all college or university transcripts
  2. Statement of 500-800 words describing career goals and rationale for pursuing a graduate
    degree in Business and Marketing Education.
  3. Three references evaluating the candidate's abilities for graduate study
  4. Interview by department, if deemed appropriate
